It was my first time at camp, and I had a blast. I've never had any experience quite like this one. I'm not by any means familiar with any of the styles of dance I did this weekend, but it was extremely refreshing to try new things. I loved loved loved it. And a weekend of dancing in which my turnout and toe point didn't really matter was desperately necessary.
So, kittens, any thoughts? Qualms? Rants? Raves? Turnips?

OMG, the performances! :)
Mon, June 18, 2007 - 11:51 AMI was looking forward to the bellydance performances, and they all lived up to my expectations (I've been spoiled by UG, Mira Betz and UG's past performances so I have high expectations) and beyond. I was blown away by the music, from Genie to AZA to the Latin ensemble. It was all so top notch and inspiring to witness. -

Re: OMG, the performances! :)
Mon, June 18, 2007 - 12:25 PMOh I loved it! I danced my ass off! So glad there was dessert this year too! Everyones classes were exceptional.
The new Flamenco lady rocked my feet off!
Only complaint (it's a small one too) more lemon in the lemonade! -
-
Re: OMG, the performances! :)
Mon, June 18, 2007 - 12:34 PMwoowwwwwww so agree with you a. the lemonade was not lemony in the slightest. i think they dropped like 2 drops of lemon juice in a cooler of ice and water. sheesh.

Ooops!
Mon, June 18, 2007 - 12:40 PMI meant to include UNMATA in there, but I typed UG twice by mistake. I left my brain in Saratoga Springs. ;)
You and your troupe were awesome on Saturday night, Amy!!! I especially loved the little low rider moves, tee hee!

Re: Let's Discuss......Reflections of Kosmos 2007
Mon, June 18, 2007 - 12:28 PMI loved the exhuberance of bhangra on the outdoor stage in the meadow. So infectious! And seeing Mira Betz go nuts with Robert Wallace's Total Rhythm program is always a joy. Seeing another side of iconic dancer Jill Parker doing Naby's West African is special. And Karamaba's drumming is always a treat. New face David Brown proved a versatile addition to so many of the musical combos. Sharing Georgios birthday was great. Fattah's Saturday night performance was excellent (as he always is). Being proven wrong about the lasting popularity of Deb's morning yoga program was an eye opener (nearly 40 people practicing with Deb on Sunday morning... outstanding!) Waking up to Amy Sigil's funky beats and going to bed to the sound of distant drums.
But my tip top moment has to be Saturday's late night party in cabin 7, with stomping performances, Joe's jug of fun, and a great round of dance charades! -

Re: Let's Discuss......Reflections of Kosmos 2007
Mon, June 18, 2007 - 12:35 PMCABIN 7 was the best ever. But you forgot about the ice cream cake and the HMR. -

Re: Let's Discuss......Reflections of Kosmos 2007
Mon, June 18, 2007 - 12:41 PMThere was sooo much that night that it's hard to include it all, but I'll add to the list: Sparky's close-quarter's flag dance! -
-
Re: Let's Discuss......Reflections of Kosmos 2007
Mon, June 18, 2007 - 1:18 PMThe flag performance was amazing as was Unmata, Holly and everyone else who danced. That was so much fun!!! -

Re: Let's Discuss......Reflections of Kosmos 2007
Wed, June 20, 2007 - 5:48 PMI want to thank everyone who performed for my BDay in Cabin 7. It was possibly one of the best birthdays I've ever had. It was one of those great impromptu events that keeps on giving. I screamed soo loud that I've had laryngitis for 3 days, 3 days. -

Re: Let's Discuss......Reflections of Kosmos 2007
Mon, June 18, 2007 - 6:27 PMAnother great year at Kosmos! Vicki's Bhangra class was a great addition. After a breathtaking performance by Mira, I nerdily told her, "You are the best dancer in the Universe!" More fuel for belly dance charades with the use of only one arm movement. Very strict rules! Kosmos reinspired my dance practice. Yoo hoo, I'll be checking for pictures! -

Re: Let's Discuss......Reflections of Kosmos 2007
Mon, June 18, 2007 - 9:27 PMI'll work on the lemonade to make it REAL lemonade. I think this was the most smooth running Kosmos to date. We've got a lot more new, exciting things for next year in the works. After working so hard and finally decompressing, it's nice to read your comments and know that this event is making people feel good. We'll send out an Email soon so all of the Kosmos folks can get in this discussion as we want to know about all of your ideas and concerns regarding the Kosmos experience.

Re: Let's Discuss......Reflections of Kosmos 2007
Mon, July 9, 2007 - 9:58 AMThanks for the kind mention....I had a blast, too! My personal fave moment- playing back-to-back Salsa and Arabic sets, which I never get to do under "normal" circumstances.
I really enjoyed all the dance shows, too, and seeing the level of teaching that is now the norm in the dance world impressed me greatly.
Oh - I knew I was going to have a good time when dinner the first night was down-home Southern style red beans and greens!

Re: Let's Discuss......Reflections of Kosmos 2007
Mon, June 18, 2007 - 10:07 PMI had a great Kosmos. I think I mastered the advanced tanning and pool-side-fun classes!
I enjoyed everything. The classes, seeing everyone, the performances, massage by Deb, etc. All the random jam sessions that go on around camp over the weekend and fill the air with music and life are so worth just being there and soaking it all in.
I missed seeing Dandara perform this year. I think all the teachers should always be on the performance schedule.
Kudos to the Fureys and friends for all their hard work again. Can't wait for next year. -

Re: Let's Discuss......Reflections of Kosmos 2007
Wed, June 20, 2007 - 9:17 AMSo this was my first time camping ever! I must say that i had a really good time. Classes were rocking and everyone was friendly and having a good time! I am sore as hell today, but it is so worth it. We are already planning to come back next year.
Now the bad ,the only thing that i didnt like was the baby rattle snake that decided to look through one of the vendors items at the same time i was looking! Scared the hell out of me,especially for my first time dealing with the outdoors!
Other than that Loved It! -

Re: Let's Discuss......Reflections of Kosmos 2007
Wed, June 20, 2007 - 9:44 AMNature can be daunting, as well as beautiful. I heard of a couple of campers who pitched their tent in a tuft of poison oak, Mira Betz' tent was set up on a red ant hill, and Gibson got up from breakfast one morning only to realize that a black widow spider was chilling between the bench slats not an inch from her backside. You try to round off as many sharp corners as possible but nature does have teeth. -

Re: Let's Discuss......Reflections of Kosmos 2007
Wed, June 20, 2007 - 6:21 PMI've been posting here on Tribe to take breaks from sorting through... wait for it... 3,000 pictures! Once the sorting is done, there's a quick polish to perk things up frame-by-frame, then the actual uploading begins. Maybe by the weekend, or start of next week at the latest (depending on other distractions). -

Re: Let's Discuss......Reflections of Kosmos 2007
Tue, June 26, 2007 - 10:38 AMguess i am a little late to reply to this. :)
we had such a fabulous time at kosmos, great people, awesome music, and unforgettable vibe, the lizards and pincher bugs in our tent were quite entertaining as well, especially when suman and i had to chase them out.
i was super nervous teaching, it being our first time there, was among so many talented dancers and teachers, but happily everyone seemed to enjoy the class and i got great feedback. So happy that we got to share a little bit of the bhangra spirit with you all!!!
Performances were super, amy and unmata, WOW! Jill and UG, fantastic as always. So great to be able to share the stage with so many wonderful dancing spirits.
Thanks for making our first time at kosmos so fun and for making us feel at home.
look forward to hopefully coming back next year. :)
in the meantime, if you guys are ever in sf and want to do some shoulder shruggin, look us up.:)

Re: Let's Discuss......Reflections of Kosmos 2007
Sun, July 8, 2007 - 5:05 AMOMG, What a great Camp!.
.... though it seems like months not weeks ago now..
I had one of the best holidays ever !The thought of KC still makes me smile even though I'm now back into the dredgery of work. I came very spur of the moment.(.as some who may have read my posts a few weeks ago), kind of on the dare of my dance teacher. She's now wishing she'd come too!!.
I was a little apprehensive as to how I'd fit in with what I figured would be a lot of very talented, more advanced dancers then myself. Everyone was so friendly and welcoming. And of course the teachers were all so fantastic. My only regret is that there wasn't time to try everything. The performances of course were another highlight. Amazing to see groups like Unmata and Ultra Gypsy and of course the beautiful Mira, who I usually only get to see on Utube. It all still seems a bit sureal. Walking round was a bit like Tribe.net had come alive..well as far as tribal and belly dancers go anyhow...
I didn't have any trouble with creatures...thank goodness! There was a a cute little tailess lizzard who seemed to be always watching me in the spa. One of the girls in my dorm said she had seen a snake one evening down near the cabins. Now you say there was rattle snake for gods sake,...ew... and people were going on to me about how dangerous the Australian bush must be...
My only complaint would be that it was hard to fit both breakfast and yoga in..
Thank you to the Fury family and all the organisers and staff. To Amanda and Elizabeth who gave me a lift, (and to Meliza for offering me a last minute lift which I didn't need).
Hi again to all the wonderful people I met. All the ladys in room 3, who put up with me of little sleep. I am slowly getting around to emailing photos to those people I promised I would.
Someone said to me on the last night .."you will be back next year for sure youve had such a good time"... well I don't know about next year.. but maybe 2009... cya all then
